Mauri Korkka Kirsti Rantanen Architects collaborated with British architect office Allies and Morrison for a new mixed use development on the fringe of the Finnish city of Hameenlinna. The scheme was awarded second place in an invited competition. The project involved a new retail component of approximately 20,000 square meters configured as an extension of Hämeenlinna's main shopping street with additional mixed use components including up to 200 new residential units and 10,000 square meters of office space. While the retail component worked as an extension of the existing town shopping district the residential and office components are organised around a new park that is built over an existing motorway that currently bisects the town. The new park along with a new urban square straddle the motorway and reconnect the existing town center with a wider residential areas of the city. |
